1930's Poor Man's Sandwich

 I recently read on the internet sandwiches that helped people get through the depression. Two of them my mother, Millicent Wiedrich Moore spoke about. She would talk about the really poor kids in her one room schoolhouse would bring black bread and lard sandwiches. If you're hungry, you'll eat anything but though sandwiches gag me. My mom spoke about sandwiches she would take - onion sandwiches. That sounds bad to me. This was in Genesee County NY which grew a lot of onions. She liked those sandwiches.
